And that’s a very, very powerful truth to understand.

What Is Self Esteem?

Self esteem is confidence in your own worth or abilities. Some call it “self respect.”

If your self esteem is unreasonably low, you have confidence issues that might come across as an unwillingness to attempt new things or to engage with people.

Too high, and you’re likely to struggle with pride issues or will dangerously have more faith in yourself than you should (Proverbs 3:5-7, Romans 12:3).

So what’s a healthy self esteem look like? I imagine it’s a balance between the 2 examples, but I get the feeling we all pretty much have a tendency to lean to either too much or not enough self esteem.

This is why it’s so important to understand your own individual identity in Christ.

And that’s why I’m not going to dive into the psychology behind self esteem. The spiritual side of it has far more impact, anyway.

Biblical Self-Esteem: Not Too Much, Not Too Little

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.

Romans 12:3

That’s a substantial warning Paul wrote. He’s essentially saying that we shouldn’t over estimate ourselves. It’s a stern warning against pride.

I sit in a lot of meetings with all kinds of churches. During one of those meetings, some church leaders were over estimating a specific level of Biblical education. They were disproportionately elevating training over my ability and calling to ministry.

So how did I respond? I actually found myself, later to my own regret, boasting about the degree I held and the one I was still chasing.

Of course it’s good to acknowledge your accomplishments. Sometimes you need to establish credibility. But in that meeting, I allowed myself to be judged by what I had done rather than by my faith, calling, and character in Christ.

That’s the warning Paul gave us in Romans 12.

Biblically, self esteem is a “sober evaluation” of yourself and who you are in Christ.

That means you don’t brag about your achievements or the things you have. It also means you don’t under estimate and belittle yourself.

After all, what really matters most to genuinely knowing who you are is understanding that it was the Son of God who has paid the price to redeem you.

Your Identity in Christ

I’m going to say it a second time.

Your identity in Christ is everything. To understand and comprehend the truth of who you are in God is powerful and that could bring a real breakthrough to your spiritual life.

So then, who are you in Christ?

1. You are loved:

God loves you. Despite our being unworthy of His love (Romans 3:23) and our falling short (Romans 3:10-11), and besides what we should have coming our way (Romans 6:23), He loves you.

He loves you because of His love for you, and not because of anything you can do, show, give, or become. I know that can be disturbingly difficult to fully grasp. But God’s incomparable, priceless love for you is absolutely true. “Christ died for us while we were still sinners. This demonstrates God’s love for us” (Romans 5:8).

But there’s just got to be something we can do to get God’s attention, to win over His favor, right?

Actually, yes, but really no: all you can do is surrender. “So then, “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Understand who you are in God. You’re so valuable to Him that He doesn’t want anything from you in exchange for His unending love.

2. You are valuable:

Sometimes people say they would lay down their life for a loved one. Some people have done just that, dying as heroes.

But God has gone even further. He willingly died for us while we were against Him (Romans 5:8).

And it was an inconceivable price He paid for you: “for God bought you with a high price” (1 Corinthians 6:20).

3. You are accepted:

Accepted by God means declared innocent. Another way to say that is justified.

In fact, in the original translation of the verse I’m about to share with you, the word justified was dikaioō (dik-ah-yo’-o).

The definition for that Greek word is “to render righteous.”

When you’re surrendered to Christ and have repented of your sins, you’ve been so completely separated from them, it’s as if they never happened (Check out John 1:29).

And in case that’s not enough for you, look at John 1:12. “However, he gave the right to become God’s children to everyone who believed in him.”

You are accepted.

4. You are precious:

Because God is so intimately familiar with who you are, and because you are His own design, you are precious to Him.

How amazing is that? The God who created everything that you can see and everything you can’t see is personally concerned with you:

Who You Really Are

I sincerely want you to take this truth home with you. So I’m going to recap.

If you follow Jesus, your identity in Christ supersedes everything else you may think about yourself. Good or bad.

You’ve been set apart for a greater purpose.

So remember these points and put these verses where you’ll use them. You are:

• Loved (Romans 5:8)
• Valuable (1 Corinthians 6:20)
• Accepted (John 1:12; Galatians 2:16)
• Precious (Psalm 139:13-18)
